Screen printing, or silk screening, is the art of applying a design to a garment through a fine mesh screen. We can print only one color at a time. We tightly stretch the fine mesh in a wooden or metal frame. Then we let the ink pass through this mesh onto the garment.

At Great West Graphics, we have one manual press for smaller jobs as well as two automatic presses that can print over 500 shirts an hour!

THE SCREEN PRINTING PROCESS

The screen printing process starts in the art room. Firstly, our experienced artist will help you create the perfect design. Secondly, we send your design to the screen room where we separate the colors. The color separation process involves singling out each color in the design and using a state-of-the-art imager to apply it to the screen.

Each screen is coated with a special light-sensitive emulsion, and different textures of mesh are used for different jobs. Then, we expose the screen to a high-power UV light, or “burn.” After that, we carefully rinse it with water.

We mount each screen on the press and line it up by hand. Then, we use the squeegee to pull the ink across the screen. We can do this either by hand on a manual press or with hydraulics on the larger automatic presses. It is very important to maintain a constant pressure and angle on the squeegees so that each shirt comes out exactly the same.

After that, we pass the shirts through a conveyor belt dryer to heat cure the ink to the shirt. Then, we stack, count, and fold the shirts at the end of the dryer.
